What is Rock Paper Scissors?

Rock Paper Scissors is a two-player game where both players pick one of three options at the same time: Rock, Paper, or Scissors.

Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper, and Paper beats Rock. Matching picks make a draw, and that round is played again.

How to play

  1. 1Create or join a lobbyOpen a room from the lobbies page, or join a friend's with its four-character code. Each room seats two.
  2. 2Pick your moveChoose Rock, Paper or Scissors before the timer runs out. One tap locks it in.
  3. 3Simultaneous revealOnce the second pick is in, both hands shake and turn over together. Then the round result shows.
  4. 4First to the target winsPlay rounds until one player has won two. Then the host can call a rematch.

Rock Paper Scissors rules

  1. 1There are no turns: each round, both players pick once, in any order.
  2. 2Until both picks are in, your opponent sees only that you locked in, even after a reload.
  3. 3The score changes only after the round verdict appears.
  4. 4The clock restarts whenever a player locks in. If yours runs out while the game is open, a random move is locked in for you.

Modes and settings

  • Best of three, always

First to two round wins takes the match; draws add rounds without counting.

  • A clock on every round

60 seconds a round by default; before the match starts, the host can choose 30 to 180. Play vs Bot uses 45.

  • Three bot levels

All three pick at random in round one. Then Tempo Rookie stays random; the others guess your most-played throw, your last counting twice. Mind Gambit counters that guess every round, Pattern Reader about eight in ten.

Rock Paper Scissors strategy

  • 1.Read the round list

The Rounds panel lists every past pair of throws; find your opponent's favourite there.

  • 2.Answer a repeat

A move thrown twice running often comes again. Beat it.

  • 3.Spot a cycle

Players who avoid repeats often step Rock, Paper, Scissors in order. Beat the next step.

  • 4.Think one step further

If they expect you to repeat a winner, they will throw its counter. Beat that instead.

  • 5.Watch your own count

If one move leads your tally, your opponent has likely noticed.

  • 6.Exploit Mind Gambit

From round two it counters its guess, so play what beats that counter.

  • 7.Stay even against Pattern Reader

Keep your throws even and it aims at your last one; play what beats the counter to it.

  • 8.Climb the levels

Tempo Rookie is pure chance, Mind Gambit rewards a clean read, Pattern Reader tests both.

Common mistakes

  • Reading Tempo Rookie

The easy bot has no pattern, so any streak you see there is chance.

  • Waiting for their lock-in

Their lock-in says nothing about the move they chose.

  • Counting draws as progress

A draw moves neither score; the match still needs two round wins.

Playing together online

  • Play a friend anywhere

Send the code or invite link; a chat sits beside the board.

  • Practise alone

Play vs Bot opens a room with the bot you chose already seated.

  • A countdown on every pick

Locking in restarts it for your opponent, so a quick pick never rushes a slow one.

  • Browser, no sign-up

Any phone, tablet or laptop works, and a guest name is enough.

Questions about Rock Paper Scissors on Boardly

Is Rock Paper Scissors on Boardly free?
Yes. Friends, all three bots and every timer setting are free; Premium only adds extras around a match, such as spectators.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in the mobile browser with no app to install. One tap on a choice tile locks your pick in.
Can I play a friend who is somewhere else?
Yes. Create a lobby, send the four-character code or the link, and play live from separate devices.
How many players are in a match?
Exactly two. Your opponent is another person or a bot, and there is never a third player alongside.
Can the bot see my pick?
No. It always chooses after you lock in, but it reads only finished rounds, never the pick still waiting to be revealed.
Can I change how long a round lasts?
Yes, as host, in the lobby settings: 30 to 180 seconds. New rooms start at 60, Play vs Bot rooms at 45.
Can we play again after a match?
Yes. The host can start a new match in the same room, or send both players back to the lobby first.
